When someone understands the power behind prayer, that person prays, and is always wanting to pray most effectively. I went to a gathering of intercessors this week. I sat in a beautiful cherry-stained wooden chair with textured burgundy leather cushions, one of rows of identical seats in a prominent meeting place. In these sturdy seats sat Prayer Warriors among Prayer Warriors. Two or three dozen people had traveled from various locations to learn more about prayer and to prayer together. As we sat and amassed shared wisdom and prayer strategies, I was overwhelmed. Each of these people understood prayer’s power with every ounce of their being, so much so that they had made it their lifestyle. These were people I was honored to sit among, people that I wanted to know.
Dutch Sheets has his finger on the pulse of God’s work in many realms: culture, politics, religion, current events, missions and economics, and other areas.
There is overlap when an author writes multiple books on the same topic, and this happens with Dutch Sheets books. The Essential Guide to Prayer: How to Pray with Power and Effectiveness reviewed sections and summarized several of Dutch Sheet’s classic teachings on prayer. It was more succinct, however, but still taught new and valuable material that made me thankful that I'd investigated it. The content addressed issues that I hadn’t pinpointed as obstacles to effective prayer. Dutch energized my future prayers with wisdom from Scripture about how to pray, especially for other people, which is called intercessory prayer.
It’s a list that I will be printing out and placing in my Bible.
6 Things We Must Ask for As We Intercede for The Lost
- That their spiritual eyes will be opened to truly see and understand the gospel.
- That all deception be broken off unbelievers.
- That the stronghold of pride in them will be torn down.
- That all Satan’s strategies and schemes will fail.
- That the Holy Spirit will hover around or envelop the unsaved person with His power and love.
- For workers-harvesters-to be sent to unbelievers.
A friend just emailed, asking for prayer for a friend whom is being tugged by the world and has made some bad decisions that are hurting many people. I immediately wanted to share some of the helpful strategies that I had just read, specifically this list. I now better understand why so many of our prayers don’t seem effective. Dutch Sheets helps us hit the bullseye with out prayers as we better understand how the enemy seeks to blind and seduce people.
The many shared testimonies in its contents will encourage and provoke prayer.
Prayer is a closet ministry. Incredible change can begin in the privacy of your home. By answering the call to intercede, any person can contribute significantly to the work of God’s Kingdom. The Essential Guide to Prayer: How to Pray with Power and Effectiveness can serve as an introductory prayer manual, or can help you hone your intercessory strategies. Prayer is one of the most significant things a Christian can do. May we all do more of it, and do it well, being change agents in the lives of all we know!
Quotes from The Essential Guide to Prayer
by Dutch Sheets
“We must ask Him to hover around them, breaking the stronghold–all beliefs, the root of pride, demonic thoughts and strategies–in their lives, releasing revelation (the unveiling) and causing them to believe in Christ. Believe me, you won’t have to persuade Him; He is waiting anxiously to release the fruit of Calvary.”
“God always shows up at the place of prayer. Many of my most life-changing encounters with God have been during times of intercession.”
“Don’t try to fight adversity alone. Find someone to help you. God will respond to your prayers.”
“There are simply some things God can work into us during periods of waiting and persevering that He can do no other way.”
“This, I believe, is the highest and most effective level of prayer–praying and declaring the Word of God…our declarations must be based on His words, agreeing with Scripture and inspired by the Holy Spirit.”
