Scripture memorization gives you super powers! The payoff is phenomenal. One good well-memorized verse has no expiration date and can be used like an endless supply of arrows in your quiver. Jesus kept the enemy at bay with His sharp scriptural retorts to Satan's temptations. This is why there is so much spiritual opposition to our "hiding the word in our hearts" (see Psalm 119:11). Doing so requires persistence, determination and consistency, resulting in a high attrition rate for many well-meaning Christians. Peggy Joyce Ruth wrote Psalm 91: Real-Life Stories of God’s Shield of Protection to motivate us to persist. She has seen that memorizing this chapter can be a matter of life and death.
Psalm 91 is a rich 250 page volume of testimonies to the often life-saving power that the memorization and recitation of chapter 91 of Psalms has provided for many people. Originally written in 2004, an update was published in 2010, as well as an edition for those in the military and another for mothers. In 2016, a workbook was added to the series.
Today, the issue of protection has become forefront in the media, domestically and internationally, as never before. The content of Psalm 91 in Scripture is comforting and contains many promises of God’s divine intervention in our lives. Psalm 91:14 is an example; “‘Because he loves me,’ says the Lord, ‘I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.’”

One story in the book is about an entire regiment in World War I. They recited Psalm 91 together every day and never suffered one casualty! Peggy Joyce Ruth explains that while physical safety is a huge component of this Scripture’s promise, as in the case with theses soldiers, many other less-obvious benefits are found through claiming it. She uses the word insurance concerning the verses. The book also contains testimonies of marriages saved, victory in spiritual warfare, evasion of traps of temptation, and protections from illness.
In the Bible, Chapter 91 of Psalms is tremendously comforting and has been a life-line of hope to many engrossed in life’s battles. These verses can be declared defensively, and they are reassuring in a crisis. Mrs.Ruth also teaches about declaring these verses offensively, to keep evil and its manifestations at bay. One version of the book cover has the tag line God’s Umbrella of Protection. Her passionate intent is to make us all aware of this chapter's tremendous effectiveness through tragedy and through the unexpected crises that happen in our lives.
Through reading this book, I have been effectively converted through Mrs. Ruth’s persuasion. I have chosen to review this book out of my conviction that this chapter in Scripture’s content is essential study material for today’s Christians. How wonderful it would be if the Christian contingency of this world could defend itself of all enemy attempts to shroud us in fear! Psalm 91 is a balm in troubling times.

In the event that you require the slightest motivation to deeply familiarize yourself with, and, ideally memorize, Psalm 91, pick up this readily-available book by Peggy Joyce Ruth. The book’s testimonies are not just convicting; they make the case that even getting into your car or gliding down a ski slope must be done with the Lord’s protection surrounding us.
Having read the book, my new-and-improved prayer walk agenda will now extend to include the eventual complete memorization of this powerful Psalm. That is with the Holy Spirit’s help, of course, since previous success in this area has been largely elusive for me. How amazing it would be if many of His children hid in our hearts this profound revelation of His intimate concern for us. God bless you as you seek His guidance on the initiative that you may take on this matter!
