Becoming The Master’s Key is about how the disciplines of giving, praying and fasting unlock heavenly power in order for us to be used mightily of God. L. Emerson Ferrell explains that giving, praying and fasting are actually on a continuum that we move through as we grow in trust and submission to the Lordship of Christ in our lives. Simply put, the more faith we have in God’s character and goodness toward us, the more we give because we trust that He will provide our every need. This same submission results in prayer that is harmonious with God’s will and purposes. We pray, seeking to be truly used by God and we see His works manifest. As we continue to grow, we begin to submit our flesh to His will through fasting.
Mark 12:30 says “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” Mr. Ferrell applies these verses to the church today; “So how can we possibly love God with all our heart, soul and mind when we don’t give or pray and much less fast?”
L. Emerson Ferrell further illustrates his point that maturity demonstrated through prayer and fasting brings breakthrough with Mark 9:29. This is the story where the disciples are unable to cast a demon out of a boy and Jesus said “This kind does not come out unless one has prayed and fasted.” Mr. Ferrell explains that true, effective fasting is a condition of the heart and is the fruit of spiritual maturity. This maturity releases God power to do powerful things.
Many people have prophesied about a transfer of wealth to God’s people, but have not seen this happen. L. Emerson Ferrell attributes this to the simple fact that God must be able to trust us, first. The church must teach and encourage the disciplines of heartfelt, Spirit-led giving, praying and fasting. Mr. Ferrell discusses how rare this is in today’s church. Instead of growing in the discipline of fasting, which exercises dying to self, there can be negativity and neglect regarding fasting. Perhaps people have come to think that speaking of fasting is prideful and pharisaical. Other people have decided that they can't fast for various reasons and do not consider it an option. It may be that fasting is overwhelming. Still, this book asserts that these assumptions should be closely examined and the possibility of fasting should be revisited. Mr. Ferrell says “The key of fasting is the weapon that controls the body and destroys the soul’s desire for self survival at ‘at all costs.’” To fast is to die to self in order to live for Christ.
This book also teaches about the spirit of mammon and how it controls the world’s systems. To achieve Godly giving, praying and fasting is to acquire the key to overcoming these systems. It is helpful to understand why God withholds these keys from people who would unknowingly bow to His enemy in the many forms that mammon takes in our culture. Mr. Ferrell uses this book to expose the enemy’s strategy and to give God’s strategies to a generation that has profound battles to fight. But with these revelations, victory for the Kingdom will be ours.
