To a non-mathematician, this means the number of ways that things can happen. If there are more things, there are more possible permutations. As a mother of five children (including a couple of adult children), I know about permutations. A family of seven people can not predict what will go right on a given day, and what will go wrong.
As a Christian, praise God I can lift my chin and “know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). But here is what I have learned after 26 plus years of marriage, several homes in several states, several churches, for better or worse, in sickness and health; it's much better when things just plain go well.
God cares very much about every detail in our lives.
Those permutations of events in our lives may seem to be the result of chance. They are not. God cares very much about every detail in our lives. This is why He tells us to be faithful in small things (Luke 16:10). They matter, and they are actually subject to the influence of external spiritual forces.
It's always important to pray and praise and worship God when chaos and confusion close in on us. But there's more that we can do.
There are many treasures in our spiritual lives that God reveals to each of us over time. Isaiah 45:3 says, “I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.”
There are three treasures that have become the currency of my daily life as I have gotten older. I have found that those permutations have impacted the number of things that can go wrong on a given day. Life seems to get increasingly complicated over time. One can get quite overwhelmed without God’s continuous encouragement and help. Yes, help. God tells us to call on Him when we need help (see Psalm 50:15). And better yet, He has shown us secrets to encourage us to help Him help us.
It's always important to pray and praise and worship God when chaos and confusion close in on us. But there is more that we can do. When situations call for spiritual warfare, there are disciplines that we can tap into. Then we can watch as God puts things in order. These things are super-powered prayer, also known as speaking in tongues, blessing areas where we walk by speaking peace into our surroundings, and binding spirits like the spirits of disorder, chaos and confusion. We have authority and when we use it, we can walk in a higher order of freedom and peace.
1. Speak in Tongues
First of all, please don’t discount this one treasure if you have not experienced speaking in tongues. If you have been baptized in the Holy Spirit, pray that the Holy Spirit will help you to take a leap of faith and start speaking in tongues. You may be surprised that you may have simply, literally not “tapped into” this gift. If this does not work, it may be time to approach your Pastor or a spirit-filled mentor to pray with you to experience and receive this gift.
When you speak in tongues, the Holy Spirit uses your voice to pray the prayers that are most needed in the order that they should be prayed.
When you have this gift, I can't state enough how important it is to use it! This is why; when you speak in tongues, the Holy Spirit uses your tongue and voice to pray the prayers that you need to pray the most, in the order that they should be prayed. It seriously doesn't get any better than that when you are experiencing a crisis, big or small! You submit to the Holy Spirit by praying in the Spirit. He rewards our trust and vulnerability by covering all ground on our behalf. The more you pray, the more thoroughly that ground is covered. As Paul says in I Corinthians 13:9, “we know in part.” Praise God that He knows in full!
One thing to know about speaking in tongues is the more the better! And it usually takes about a half hour of good tongue-speaking to hit a flow where the Holy Spirit just takes over and you can feel in your spirit that things are happening. It's a very exciting experience and many people have never spoken in tongues long enough to get to this place. When you reach this place of where the words flow, they become more varied and come faster and with much less effort. Your unknown vocabulary may seem to increase. I believe that these are condensed and powerful prayers. In your spirit you feel like great things are happening, that mountains are moving and a way is being made for you. It's awesome!
If you picture yourself kneeling in a prayer closet, speaking a language unknown to you for hours, you may have the wrong picture of what the life-discipline of tongues has to look like. I'm sure that there are people who can do this and do. God bless them! But I rarely can, and praise God, it has not mattered! My best place to speak in tongues is my laundry room, where I have spent countless hours praying in tongues as I fold and sort. I realized recently that I automatically start speaking in tongues when I open the dryer! I pray in the Spirit on walks, in the car, while loading the dishwasher. My kids don’t even notice anymore. I don’t yell, I speak quietly. And yes, there are times when, in despair, I close my bedroom door and fall on my bed and cry out to God in this language He has given me. And then I watch as things change.
2. Speak Peace Into the Room
My son has a friend whose behavior in not exemplary at times. Praise God, she has gotten better, but there were years when she was very difficult. For example, she would undo her safety belt and wait for a directive from me to re-buckle. She would refuse. I would pull over the car and re-buckle it. She would undo it. I would threaten to take fun away. She did not care. She was defiant. My son did not even want to be with her. I used the discipline that I could, without success. I became desperate because I didn't want to shut her out. She needed to be accepted.
"When you enter a house, first say, 'Peace to this house.’” -Luke 10:5
I used the untapped well of speaking peace (combined with binding spirits, explained next) even before she got into the car one day. I was determined that she would effectively experience authority and boundaries in my car and my home that day. I had just listened to a Bethel Church teaching on speaking peace into a place. I had looked at Luke 10:5, the verse that this teaching is based on; ”When you enter a house, first say, 'Peace to this house.’” Noticing that this directive was given by Jesus as a practice to follow, I realized that I had been remiss. I had never done this.
Noticing that this directive was given by Jesus as a practice to follow,
I realized that I had been remiss.
I took this opportunity to speak peace first into the rooms where the kids played together, and then into the car. Then I told all spirits (naming the ones that the Holy Spirit brought to my mind) to get out of my home and cars, and told the ones that were planning on coming in with this little girl to stay away, in Jesus’ name. It was simple and took a couple of minutes. Guess what? That was the first of many peace-filled, safe, pleasant car rides to come. And the playdates changed significantly, too.
3. Bind Spirits of Chaos and Confusion (and Others)
If you are a disciple of Jesus, He has given you authority; “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.” -Luke 10:19
If He has given us power over the enemy, then He certainly has given us power over a bad day. It is true that we will have trouble in this world (see John 16:33), but He has overcome the world! And I firmly believe that we allow the enemy to trample all over us when we oftentimes just need to tell him, in Jesus’ name, to stop it!
“We allow the enemy to trample all over us when we oftentimes
just need to tell him, in Jesus’ name, to stop it!”
Simply put, Jesus told us, among other things, to “cast out demons” (Matthew 10:8). One does not need to be a trained deliverance minister to cast demons out of your home and even out of your car. Let me say that I encourage training, because the battle is bigger than our cars, but simple problems sometimes have simple answers. I took authority, given to me by Jesus, to tell demons to stay out of my car and home and they stayed out, in Jesus’ name. Everyone won, especially the little girl who experienced a rare peace in her life.
It is important to understand that it is not advisable to practice deliverance on a child without the parent’s permission and involvement, and initiation. They have authority over their child. You can pray for the family but taking authority over a child can be dangerous because if the family does not attend to the issues that allowed the child to be afflicted in the first place, deliverance allows an “empty room” for (seven) more spirits to occupy (see Matthew 12:44 and 45). This is true for people, in general. Follow the Holy Spirit’s lead and do no more.
Demons can change atmospheres. Praise God, Jesus has given
us the authority to take back the atmosphere around us.
In the car/play date situation, I was taking authority over the spaces and situation, not the little girl. I was binding these spirits, not casting them out. Demons can effect more than our hearts, souls, minds and bodies. They can change atmospheres. Praise God, Jesus has given us the authority to take back the atmosphere around us.
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the names of the spirits that are interfering with your plans, activities and situations. He will bring them to mind. (Also, see the list below with demon names if you want to be sure to cover as much ground as possible.) This is the prayer; “In Jesus’ Name, spirits of chaos and confusion (or whatever names you are praying), I command you to leave this situation and place (I sometimes add time if there is a set timeframe). I bind you and command you to leave in Jesus’ Name.” It is important to remember that you have this authority. Do not doubt. You must speak, but you do not need to shout.
Note that spirits sometimes try to return to places they have occupied for a long time. If they seem to be operating, it does not mean that they did not leave. They may have returned, expecting you to not know that they can be told to leave again. Do so. I have had to re-evict one spirit (one that afflicted my health) a dozen times. It was stubborn, and I would reassert my authority, in annoyance. But it eventually caught on and left for good. Expect them to be gone for good. If they return, it is not a big deal to tell them to go again. Always praise Jesus for the victory and freedom that He has given you!
Be patient as you see God turn things around profoundly as you use these amazing tools. He wants us to experience peace and joy in our daily lives. You will begin to be so dependent on these treasures that you will not know how you lived not operating with them. The enemy seeks to steal and kill and destroy (John10:10), but we are more than conquerers in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:31). Our God is an equipper of His saints (see Ephesians 4:12). If God is for us, who can be against us (Romans 8:31)?
